Royal Bhutan Country Club - Doak + Nandrajog

Golf architects Tom Doak and Vijit Nandrajog have been commissioned to build a new golf course Royal Bhutan Country Club on a riverside plot of land adjacent to Gelephu Mindfulness City(GMC). The King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck accompanied GMC Founding Member Mr. Ming Z. Mei with Tom Doak and Vijit Nandrajog to the site for the new golf course. Preliminary clearing of the site has begun.

Vijit Nandrajog is the principal behind Golf Design India. Nandrajog has built new golf courses and renovated a number of golf courses. Nandrajog's significant work recently was the design of a new 9 holes and redesign, build and opening of Kharghar Valley Golf Course near Mumbai.

Gelephu is in southern Bhutan near the Indian border state of Assam. Gelephu is at an elevation of approximately 221 meters (725 feet) above sea level. The subtropical climate is warm and humid influenced heavily by the South Asian monsoon season from June to September. Temperatures are mild in winter with average lows around 15°C (59°F). Spring and summer highs commonly range from 30–37°C (86–99°F). Annual rainfall is high at 3.5 to 5 meters (140–200 inches). Approximately 75–85% of the rainfall occurs during monsoon season.

Gelephu International Airport is planned to open in 2029. Gelephu Mindfulness City has planning assistance from Bjarke Ingels Group.

As of 2026, Bhutan is an energy exporter of 10,000–12,000 GWh to India. The Gelephu region in southern Bhutan sits near several major river systems with significant hydropower potential contributing to Bhutan’s nationwide power generation capacity of more than 2,500 MW.
